SNOW

Half-way through February already and the days are lengthening even if it is still a bit cold. The following picture shows the range in the snow. A number of our more hardy members kept shooting; very peaceful but you needed a good filter to reduce the light!

Zero degrees

COACHING

18 months ago the Club had one NSRA qualified instructor. Following successful courses we now have 5 qualified Club Coaches! These are Dave Britchford, Malcolm Brain, Mike Kettle, Jim Howard and Graham Rowcroft. So if you want to up your shooting game have a word with one of the coaches.

MEMBERSHIP

It's a good job we now have some Club coaches because Club membership has risen and is getting towards 70 members. We like to continue to encourage new members whilst taking care not to be victims of our own success and disappoint both existing members and newcomers by not having enough time for everybody to shoot. The Committee will delay the entry of new members if training resources are stretched. Fortunately the early 'labour intensive' stage for new shooters doesn't usually last very long.

COMPETITIONS

As new shooters arrive any time through the year it may be a while before they can sign up for the major summer and winter competitions. So we are considering the inauguration of a 'rolling' 10 week Meridian competition that will be available more frequently.
Junior shooters should note that we will also introduce ad hoc competitions with prizes such as levy tokens, and will also start marking cards shot for averages as part of awarding the Junior Cup. Any ideas and suggestions on competitions would be welcome Malcolm Brain or Graham Rowcroft.

WORK PARTY

We will be having a range clearing day in March to make sure the Club looks smart for all competitors at the Open Shoot. Lend a hand on range clearing and get a free levy token! We will also need helpers over the weekend of the open shoot. Nothing onerous and if you can donate a couple of hours it is always much appreciated.

The overall winner taking first place in A Class was Barry Butler of Eastbourne with a score of 588 out of 600. Barry completed one of his three cards in 6 minutes and 30 seconds of the 20 minute detail, and still maintained his high scoring rate. Mrs C Mills of Ramsgate and Dover Club won the Veterans Handicap, The Ladies Handicap and Class C competitions. For good measure she also won the Class C and D Pairs with her husband. Message from the Chairman

Thanks to all of you who supported the Open Shoot 8-9 April. There was some excellent shooting, and although the honours at A and B Class went to our visitors, Tim Duncan and Geoff Gilbert won Class C and D respectively. The overall winner was David Ayling of Aldingbourne. He is the one with the beard looking pretty pleased with himself in the picture. The range looked good, the cuisine was excellent (Heather's cakes were exemplary as usual).

Winner, Class A

You will probably have noticed that the trees along the range have been cut back. There are a few more items of maintenance to be attended to:

  • The indoor range will need to be upgraded slightly in order to meet the criteria required by the Army for their cadets.
  • Whilst this may not appear essential, wherever potential safety issues are highlighted the Committee feels that all reasonable steps should be taken to bring the range up to standard.
  • Then we have some electrical work to be done, all of which will require certification.
  • We are keeping an eye on the oil tank, which is getting near the end of its life and the whole installation would at that point require upgrading.
  • Finally, we need to keep buying equipment such that the Club has good kit available.
  • The Committee is seeking to spread the outlay over time as much as possible to keep the cash flow balanced.

I am glad to report that a number of new shooters are beginning to settle down and have rached a sufficient standard of safety to be going solo.

Finally, a number of members have commented that it is sad to see our beautiful range being under utilised at the weekends. The Committee is therefore offering weekend shooting facilities to other clubs, for a set fee of £3 and bringing their own targets (or paying for targets they use). Part of this package will be to open the range on a Saturday morning from April until September (normal Sunday shooting will also be available for other clubs). Saturday opening has meant having a set duty officer rota rather than the current ad-hoc arrangements. The committee feels that this will help popularise the Club, attract shooters from other ranges, and of course bring in additional income.

Volunteer duty officers from experienced members are always needed so please give this some thought.

Comments from all are welcome as usual.
    Good shooting!

CRACKSHOTS MAKE LIGHT OF TRICKY CONDITIONS

Over 70 competitors from across the Home Counties took part at the Spring Open Shoot at the East Grinstead Target Shooting Club at the weekend. Despite a cold, blustery wind and varying light conditions some excellent scores were posted in the 50 metres and 100 yard Dewar competition. Winner of the Felbridge Bowl for the highest aggregate score in Class A was David Ayling of Aldingbourne, with a score of 786 x800. Winner of the Rentokil Cup for Class B was Jonathan Smalley of Chobham & District, who also won the Juniors' Dewar. East Grinstead had successes in Class C and D, where Tim Duncan and Geoff Gilbert won the Observer Cup and the Louis G Ford Trophy respectively.
