Target shooting is a very technical sport. As a coach I spend a lot of my time talking about details of the shooting process. So, to give you an idea, here are some of the things I do:
- Lay rifle on side of FP, pointing down the range.
-
Lay shooting mat on FP.
- Align mat with target
- Check it's within FP limits.
- Adjust if necessary.
- move rifle onto mat
-
Place spotting scope in position
- Align and focus scope on target, offset slightly to avoid knocking it while getting into position.
- Place ammo box in approximate location.
-
Kneel on mat with support knee in position
- check clothing all straight
- jacket pulled down onto shoulders
-
Lay down
- check jacket is straight and flat under support hip.
- place hip on jacket
-
place support elbow in correct location
- adjust position with triggering hand
- adjust scope location
- raise triggering knee to provide support
- await range RCO command to commence
-
Mount rifle
- lift rifle with triggering hand
- connect sling with support hand
- place support hand up against handstop
- make sure rifle is correctly located in support hand
- grip rifle with support hand
- adjust support elbow location if necessary
- remove breech flag and place on mat
- grip butt with triggering hand
- roll slightly towards support side (opens shoulder making it easier to place the butt exactly where I want it)
- place butt in shoulder in correct location
- roll back to my approximate position
- release support hand so it is relaxed
- touch support fingers with triggering hand (ensures shoulder is back in correct location)
-
place triggering hand on grip
- locate so that trigger finger locates correctly on trigger
- gently grip rifle (like gripping a budgey)
-
place triggering elbow on mat
- adjust elbow as necessary so it feels right.
-
place cheek on cheekpiece
- adjust location of ammo box
- reset hand on grip
- reset elbow
-
look through sights
- This is the first time I've looked down the range since I aligned the mat with the target. Even now the focus is on the sights rather than the aiming mark
- is eye centred on rearsight?
- if not, look away and repeat from 7(n).
- is foresight centred in rearsight
- if not, look away, very minor adjustment, and repeat from 7(o)
- look away
- check scope position and adjust with triggering hand now that my position is set
-
Aiming
-
Check everything from your toes to the tips of your fingers are relaxed with no undue tension.
- release grip on rifle with support hand if not already done so at 7(l)
- does the position feel right?
- breath out, let it settle.
- look through sights
- are they pointing at the correct aiming mark?
-
No:
- look away
- adjust position and
- repeat from at least 8(a) depending on how far out you were
-
Yes:
- look away
-
adjust positon, probably triggering eldow as it is only a very minor adjustment
- lift elbow, probably only a partial lift to take some of the pressure of it.
- replace elbow in slightly different position
- relax, does position feel right, haven't imported any tension?
- repeat from7(q)(iv)
-
After a varying number of repitions through 8(a) the question at 8(a)(v) goes from
- correct aiming mark? to
- on the aiming mark? to
- centred (ish) on the aiming mark?
- centred on the aiming mark?
-
When the answer to 8(b)(iv) is yes, I know that next time I breath out it will come up centred on the aiming mark because I haven't changed anything. So:
- breath out, while taking up first pressure
-
let it settle while doing final checks
- eye centred OK?
- foresight centred OK?
- aiming mark centred OK?
-
Three OKs,
- squeeze trigger. The closer this gets to instantaneous the better.
- hold the aim
- watch the recoil
- Post Shot Analysis (PSA)
- check scope to confirm PSA
- open bolt and eject
- load next round (unless it's the last shot)
-
Less than three OKs
- release first pressure
- minor adjustment until the answer to 8(b)(iv) is yes
- repeat from 8(c)
-
Check everything from your toes to the tips of your fingers are relaxed with no undue tension.
-
Adjust position to next aiming mark.
- repeat from 8(a)
